The Hellenic Foundation for Culture welcomes Petros Markaris in his first visit to the UK to take part in this years CRIME IN TRANSLATION panel, entitled Speaking in Tongues. Chaired by literary agent Jane Gregory, and including Arnaldur Indridason (Iceland) and Carlo Lucarelli (Italy), the panel is part of the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival.
Petros Markaris visit to Harrogate anticipates the publication of his The Late Night News the first in a new series of Harvill thrillers set in Greece and centered round the grumpy but irresistible figure of Inspector Costas Haritos (due out in August 2004 early copies will be on sale at this event).

PETROS MARKARIS was born in Istanbul in 1937. Having studied Economics, he made his literary debut in Greece in 1965 with a theatrical work, The Tale of Ali Retzo. He is a playwright, the creator of a popular series for Greek television and has translated the works of many German dramatists, including Brecht and Goethe. He lives in Athens.
