Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949) exerted a considerable influence on modern Greek music and his work is still attracting interest world-wide. Marking the centenary of the composer's birth, this evening's concert features a number of his most popular works, including the UK premiere of several of his songs, alongside music by his contemporary Yannis Constantinidis. The programme also includes part of the song cycle Eros ke Thanatos (Love and Death), written in 1949 by Mikis Theodorakis and demonstrating the composer’s talent in the classical vein, as well as premieres by contemporary Greek composers George Tsontakis and Demosthenis Stephanidis.
