Athena Live!
An evening of Greek music

Athena Andreadis - voice, compositions, arrangements
Matthaios Tsahouridis - pontic lyra, oud
Werner Kristiansen - acoustic guitar
Tom Mason - double-bass
Asaf Sirkis - percussion

Athena's distinctive voice has become a valued treasure on the world music circuit. Electrifying performances have earned her praise from the public and media alike: The BBC's Charlie Gillett led the plaudits after the recent concert at London's Union Chapel.

The Independent described Athena as "beguiling", and the music press has waxed lyrical too:

"a successful mix of traditional instrumentation and contemporary style like Bob Marley gave us reggae, so Athena holds the key to give the Greek oriental a space in the European musical coat of many colours..."

"Athena and her band will definitely make their mark."
fRoots magazine

An intriguing and ingenious combination of musical instruments (Greek pontiaki lyra, guitar, double-bass and Persian percussion) create the perfect forum for a very special voice. Equally comfortable in a variety of styles, Athena leads the band expertly yet seemingly effortlessly. It is the natural, innate talent this indicates that proves so conclusively what a rare gift Athena's is. Effective yet sensitive arrangements using non-traditional instruments or combinations, interchanging seamlessly with new compositions on the same concert program are almost impossible to find. But it is the marriage of these elements in performances by Athena Andreadis and her band which have created such a stir on the world music circuit recently.

Marking her South Bank debut, this evening’s concert features Athena's own compositions alongside interpretations of traditional Greek songs. A must for all world music fans.
